Bitter End Yacht Club, Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands
Low season/High season*
$550/$750
800/872-2392 or 305/468-0168; www.beyc.com
Think of this casual, water sports-mad resort as a tropical sleepaway camp—one where the mess hall has the good sense to serve lobster-and-crab cakes and nutmeg-dusted rum punches, and the bunkhouses are wood-frame beachfront villas cooled by paddle fans and open-to-the-trades slat windows. A fleet of more than 100 watercraft—from sea kayaks to Hobie Cats to Freedom 30 yachts—is available to guests free; kids get their sea legs in the excellent Junior Watersports Program with sailing, snorkeling, and windsurfing lessons. Evenings are spent watching family movies on an outdoor screen or listening to the house steel-drum band. Access to the resort, which sits on the eastern end of arid, scrubby Virgin Gorda, is by water only; a ferry makes the crossing from Tortola in 35 minutes.

Sandy Lane, Barbados
Low season/High season*
$700/$2,000
866/444-4080 or 246/444-2000; www.sandylane.com
Long the chosen Caribbean retreat of the silk-cravat and shih tzu-in-a-satchel set, this 112-room hotel on Barbados's mahogany tree-studded western coast greatly expanded its children's offerings following extensive renovations in 2001. Among the families that have arrived since then are Cindy Crawford and crew, the Seinfelds, and the Donatella Versaces. While the appeal of Porthault linens may be lost on your kids, they will certainly give a thumbs-up to the plasma-screen TV's, the hilarity-inspiring multi-spray showers, and the terrific—and complimentary—Treehouse Club (for ages 3 to 12), which will have them dancing the limbo, flying kites, and perfecting their backhands. Teens have their own lounge, organized sports clinics, and excursions to swim with turtles or explore nearby limestone caves. One of Barbados's top snorkeling sites is a short walk up the beach.
