T+L Reports: English Garden

Like this article?

Britain's legion of green thumbs are busy celebrating the bicentennial of the Royal Horticultural Society; appropriately, the latest addition to the Elizabethan country-house hotel Great Fosters (Stroude Rd., Egham, Surrey; 44-1784/433-822; www.greatfosters.co.uk; doubles from $272) is a clever 21st-century testament to England's grand gardening tradition. An imposing earthwork amphitheater now rises in grass-covered circles, capping off a long avenue of lime trees beyond the hotel's acclaimed Arts and Crafts knot garden and a gentlyrippling moat dating from medieval times. Mercifully, the tiered landscape conceals the motorway that roars past the boundary of the property—restoring the peace that reigned when Elizabeth I herself stayed here in the late 1500's.
