The river test in southern England is one of the world's finest trout streams. The word in American fly-fishing circles was that you had to book your "beat," or designated stretch of the river, a year in advance. No more. Richard Fannon, manager of historic Lainston House in Winchester, has secured three beats for his guests on the Test in nearby Compton. He also has access to several other beats, including one just below the river's springhead at Newton-Stacey.
Beats at Compton cost $300 a day during the popular mayfly season, May 10-June 15; $225 June 16-October 1. Lainston House has a weekend package that includes two nights with a la carte dinner and full English breakfast for $330, double. Call 011 44-1962/863-588, fax 011 44-1962/776-672.
