T+L Reports: Waikiki Outdoor Movies

Like this article?

Call it the Cinema Paradiso of the Pacific. On Saturdays and Sundays, the city of Honolulu erects a 30-foot movie screen for an evening of alfresco films on Kuhio Beach, a popular stretch of sand near the Kapahulu Pier on Oahu's southern shore. Crowds of islanders and visitors watch from blankets on the beach while surfers paddle in to get a better view of such classics as American Graffiti, Casablanca, and, of course, Blue Hawaii. Don't want to bring your own picnic?Restaurants set up booths selling everything from shave ice with adzuki beans to plate lunches, dim sum, and ribs. Catch the last of the afternoon swells, just before the curtain goes up. 808/923-1094 or www.waikikiimprovement.org for movie listings.
