The underground art and culture scene in Los Angeles has a new impresario, and her name is Wendy Yao. Operating out of her tiny Chinatown boutique, enigmatically called Ooga Booga (943 N. Broadway, #203; 213/617-1105; www.oogaboogastore.com), Yao has created a venue where her cutting-edge artist, musician, and designer friends can show off their more personal creations at reasonable prices. "Ooga Booga is a serious yet fun and accessible nexus for the exchange of information and ideas," says Yao, who at 26 already has loads of street cred (she's toured nationally with various punk bands since she was in high school). Located just down the block from the Chinatown metro stop and the Mountain Bar, an artsy after-hours hangout, Ooga Booga corrals the neighborhood's eccentric creative energies into one insider's highly individual vision. Look for fashion star Benjamin Cho's handmade T-shirts, legendary K Records founder Calvin Johnson's mix tapes, and, true to Yao's musical roots, performances by local rockers like My Barbarian in the shop's adjoining courtyard.
