The Belgian city of Liège, an industrial riverfront port east of Brussels, is suddenly on the design radar, thanks to Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The ultramodern new Liège-Guillemins train station (sncb.be)—one of the most spectacular in Europe—is colossal: spanning 518 feet, it has 39 arched white steel ribs (joined by panes of clear glass) that soar 121 feet above the rails. Travelers enter the ticketing hall on the first floor and then head to the second-level platforms, where high-speed trains take off daily for Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
