T+L Reports: Clean Heartland Living

From February 2003

By Bonnie Tsui

Where do you go when you're looking for a retreat that pampers you and the environment? Arbor House, a landmark 19th-century building across from Madison's Lake Wingra, is retrofitted with eco-friendly passive-solar heating and cooling. At the eight-bedroom inn—all skylights and gardens—linens are made with unbleached cotton, and the bath products are by Aveda. Have an organic breakfast in the sun-filled annex, where soaring 18-foot ceilings are supported by 100-year-old recycled Douglas fir; then spend the day cross-country skiing miles of trails nearby or skating on the lake. A new sauna and an on-call massage therapist round out the mix. Now, you can have your nature and be nurtured, too. Arbor House, 3402 Monroe St., Madison, Wis.; 608/238-2981; www.arbor-house.com; doubles from $95.
