Six just-opened hotels that are setting new standards of style:
NORTH AMERICA The West Coast's Kimpton Group is launching an East Coast invasion. Washington, D.C's Hotel Rouge (1315 16th St. NW; 202/232-8000; doubles from $125) is an ode to all things red- love the Bloody Mary bar. • In Georgia, the lakeside Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation (Lake Oconee Trail; 706/467-0600 or 800/241-3333; doubles from $225) evokes the turn-of-the-century Adirondack great camps.

EUROPE Having restored Auchinleck House in southwest Scotland (Ochiltree, Ayrshire; 44-1628/825-925; from $1,240 a night for up to 13 people), James Boswell's family seat, the U.K.'s Landmark Trust is now renting it out. • An astounding $1 million was spent on each of the 21 suites at the neo-Gothic Grand Hotel a Villa Feltrinelli (38- 40 Via Rimembranza, Gargnano; 39-0365/798-000; doubles from $520), now a luxury retreat on Italy's Lake Garda.

AFRICA Kwandwe Private Game Reserve (Eastern Cape, South Africa; 27-11/809-4300; doubles from $900, including all meals) is a sprawling safari lodge an hour by air from Cape Town. Expect Big Five sightings from luxurious suites.

ASIA Intrepid designer Terence Conran is extending his brand to India with the Park Hotel (14/7 Mahatma Gandhi Rd.; 91-80/559-4666; doubles from $105), Bangalore's first boutique property. It's the talk of the subcontinent.
