"Paris, London, Milan," says Evan Cole, rhapsodizing about world-class shopping locales. "And now—Culver City." The cofounder of New York furniture emporium ABC Carpet & Home is, of course, only half serious. But his latest venture, H. D. Buttercup (3225 Helms Ave.; 310/558-8900; www.hdbuttercup.com), inside the 1930's Egyptian Deco Helms Bakery, has already begun to transform this Los Angeles suburb into a design destination. The 100,000-square-foot, solar-powered world bazaar comprises more than 50 high-end furniture and accessory manufacturers. Celebrities known for their savvy style and eco-friendly disposition (Cameron Diaz, Susan Sarandon) have already developed a taste for the exotic imports, which include Asian ceramics, Brazilian hardwood tables, afghan rugs, Italian linens, and Indian silks. —DAVID A.
