Boston: After Dark

The Indie Rocker

Every touring act from Peaches to Death Cab for Cutie has passed through the Middle East (472–480 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge; 617/497-0576), where rock, punk, folk, hip-hop, and Afrobeat are performed nightly on three separate stages.

The Proper Bostonian

The recently restored Oak Bar at the Fairmont Copley Plaza hotel (138 St. James Ave.; 617/267-5300) has dark wood paneling, appropriately dim lighting, and an extensive menu of specialty martinis (20 at last count).

Zen and the Art of the Cocktail

If the moody lighting, Nepalese statuary, and trance sound track at OM Lounge (92 Winthrop St., Cambridge; 617/576-2800) don’t put you in the mood, the “aromatherapy” cocktails (enlivened by essences of jasmine, lavender, cucumber, and rose) surely will.

The Local Joint

A retro faux-dive with a five-foot model airplane hanging from the tin ceiling, B-Side Lounge (92 Hampshire St., Cambridge; 617/354-0766) is immensely popular with post-college hipsters and aficionados of vintage cocktails like sidecars, old-fashioneds, and the “last word”: green chartreuse, gin, maraschino liqueur, and lemon juice.
