Best Countries for Solo Travelers

Robert Harding Picture Library Ltd/Alamy

No. 10: Chile

Happiness Ranking: 46
Safety Ranking: 28

It’s the outdoors that make Chile such a natural for solo travelers. From hiking and climbing in Patagonia to exploring the volcanoes and geysers of the Atacama Desert, the driest place in the world, Chile is a veritable 3,998-mile-long adventure camp. In winter, there’s incredible skiing at resorts like Portillo, which has a single lodge where everyone is made to feel part of the family. In summer, you’ll find sea kayaking along the coast of Chiloé Island, the largest island in South America. The capital city of Santiago is friendly and easy to navigate, thanks to a great underground system. But it’s Chile’s easygoing friendliness that runs throughout. You might well find yourself as a guest at a family asado, or Chilean barbecue, and becoming part of a local family may be the ultimate definition of a friendly country.
