Barcelona’s Center of Glamour

Like this article?

Ask a sophisticated Barcelona native where he’ll be this weekend, and the answer is often the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB). Since it opened in 1994 inside a gorgeously rehabilitated 18th-century hospice in the Raval neighborhood, the CCCB has become a cultural guidepost for the city, hosting prominent festivals and multimedia exhibitions each year. (The fact that the CCCB shares a plaza with the Museu d’Art Contemporani doesn’t hurt its high profile either.) The center’s most glamorous event is Sónar, an electronic music and art festival. Held each June, it draws more than 80,000 people—rave-happy twentysomethings and classical-music lovers alike. Kosmopolis, a biannual literature festival (next installment: October 2008), looks at Spanish-language art, film, poetry, and books. The annual November L’Alternativa film festival is also on the 2008 roster. 5 Montalegre; 34/93-306-4100; cccb.org.
