Ashmolean Museum Opens New Galleries

England Founded in 1683, the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology at Oxford University has treasures that span the history of mankind, from Minoan artifacts and English silver to an outstanding collection of drawings by Raphael and some of the most important pre-dynastic Egyptian antiquities in Europe. A major redevelopment by Modernist architect Rick Mather opens on November 7, doubling the Ashmolean’s exhibition space with 39 new galleries of permanent themed collections, an education center, and a rooftop restaurant linked to the present museum, an 1845 Neoclassical structure by Charles Cockerell.
