San Francisco has serious beer cred, beginning with Anchor Brewery, the oldest craft brewery still in operation in the U.S. (opened in 1896). This stylish city, however, also stays on the cutting edge: the new and buzz-generating Cervecería de MateVeza, off Dolores Park, makes beers infused with yerba mate, a naturally caffeinated herb from South America (a natural fit for this java-loving town); beers are served alongside Argentinean-style empanadas. Indeed, the city ranked first for its ethnic cuisine.
