With guesthouses in the south of France as common as snails after a rainfall, La Maison is giving the genre a stylish update. The 18th-century maison de village, just a few miles from the romantic market town of Uzès, has wide-open views of the surrounding garigue and Mont Ventoux and a walled swimming pool fringed with olive trees and oleander. The inn's five rooms (Cuzco, with its own terrace, is the one to snag) that prove there is life in the French country look yet. After running a B&B for nearly two decades in a Loire Valley château, owner Christian Vaurie, along with his partner, Pierre Berringer, have perfected the tricky art of playing host to paying guests in one's own residence.
