The Cultural Revolution may have stalled the development of China's art scene (until the mid-eighties, only government-sanctioned photographers were allowed to exhibit their work), but today it's booming. Witness the 60 young artists in "Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China," at both the Asia Society and International Center of Photography in New York City through September 5. Liu Zheng exposes the seamy side of China's embrace of capitalism in deliberately compromising portraits of businessmen, while graffiti artist Zhang Dali chisels designs intohistoric buildings slotted for demolition to criticizecontemporary Chinese urbanism. The styles vary widely, but what underlies all the work is a newfound cultural self-confidence that's truly revolutionary.
