T+L Reports: World Stage

Like this article?

The romantic escapades of the man who turned Gregor Samsa into a giant bug?Yes, they're all here in Kafka in Love. Canadian director Thom Sokoloski weaves Yiddish and Sephardic songs, sets inspired by Marc Chagall, and water ballets into a tale of the Czech writer's life that is as strangely alluring as his fiction. Premiering at Toronto's du Maurier World Stage, it's one of more than 18 theatrical productions from Europe, Africa, and North America. Poland's Molière, Aleksander Fredro, brings the comedy Magnetism of the Heart, about two sisters who have pledged never to marry. And INDABA—devoted to new work from South Africa—offers plays, music, films, and readings from the likes of novelist Zakes Mda, often hailed as the leading voice of post-apartheid black lit. 416/973-4000; www.harbourfront.on.ca; April 1-27.
