Along the Shore
Horned Dorset Primavera, Puerto Rico
Built on four hilly acres that tumble down to the sea, this 31-room inn could just as easily be in Andalusia as in the Caribbean. The Horned Dorset—with its lush gardens, Moorish fountains, and tiled staircases—will soon add 22 hillside villas; consider them the last word in intimacy. Apartado 1132, Rincón, P.R.; 800/633-1857; www.horneddorset.com; doubles from $380.
Hotel Raya, Italy
The 30-room property is snuggled on Panarea, one of the Aeolian Islands, north of Sicily. Since there's no airport, most visitors arrive by hydrofoil; the shortest traveling time from anywhere in Sicily is just under two hours. But the Raya rewards such effort with the kind of proto-Mediterranean hideaway you probably thought went the way of Jackie O.'s owlish sun shades: think whitewashed surfaces, bathrooms built around naturally occurring boulders, and private terraces with exalting views of the simmering volcano on neighboring Stromboli. Via San Pietro, Panarea, Italy; 39-090/983-013; www.hotelraya.it; doubles from $176. Reopens March 28.
Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay
Wander the winding lanes of this replica Balinese village and you'll find small surprises at every bend. Tiny rice offerings to the gods are tucked in doorways. Stone shrines in the 147 villas are wrapped in ceremonial cloth. For the ultimate in indulgence, check into one of the nine two- to four-bedroom estates, and spend one night in every bed. Jimbaran, Denpasar, Bali; 800/332-3442 or 62-361/701-010; www.fourseasons.com; villas from $575, estates from $850 through March 31.
