Traditional Tranquility: England’s Lake District

Small inns dot the Lake District in England, which is famed for its rugged beauty. The area is a beguiling combination of windswept, heather-clad mountains and moors, clusters of silver-blue lakes, and mottled green forests. Check-in at Holbeck Ghyll, a cozy 19th-century hunting lodge overlooking Lake Windermere and the hills, full of traditional English touches: oak paneling, wing chairs, a croquet lawn, and two black Labradors. Once you’re settled in, stop by William Wordsworth’s former home, Dove Cottage, now a museum with original manuscripts by the poet as well as a vast collection of watercolor paintings from the 19th-century Romantic movement. Doubles from $300 including breakfast. —Alison Tyler
