Whalers Village Museum
Lahaina, Maui, HI, United States
Located in the Whalers Village Shopping Center, the aptly named Whalers Village Museum explores the history of Lahaina’s biggest industry in the 1800's. On the mall’s main level, there are two featured exhibits: the skeletal remains of a 40-foot sperm whale, and a scale model of a whaling boat, which shows the tight living-quarters for the typical 25-man crew. Inside the museum, specimens and photographs of 70 whale species are on display (like a humpback whale skull), as is a rare collection of now-illegal, 19th-century scrimshaw — whale teeth carved with designs. Admission is always free.
Insider Tip:
On the audio tour, listen to real journal-entries of 19th-century sailors, while viewing the whaling ship.
