Established in 1931, the Vancouver Art Gallery is the largest in Western Canada, and showcases the works of primarily regional artists, with some international contributions, as well. Set in a 1903 courthouse building with a Neo-Classical central rotunda, there are four floors worth of exhibition space. The permanent collection includes a number of pieces by post-impressionist, Victoria-born painter Emily Carr, along with notable photographs by Cindy Sherman, among others, and revolving collections from provocative artists spanning across disciplines, with an emphasis on exploring First Nation (native Canadian) culture.
