A man with a PhD in Chemistry from Oxford may not be the first person you’d expect to start a Tibetan textiles company, but that’s exactly what Chris Buckley did in 2000, leaving product development to launch a craft and textile business. In 2006, he partnered with Tibetan native Norbu Tsering to start the Tibet Tanva Weaving Company, which operates a workshop and store near Lhasa. This ground-floor mall location in Shunyi showcases and sells the handcrafted rugs, which are made with sustainable techniques and non-toxic dyes.
