Oosterdok

Stedelijk Museum

13 Paulus Potterstraat
Amsterdam, Netherlands
TEL: 31 20 573-2911

While construction on the Stedelijk’s new Museum Square home is in full swing (expect an early-2010 completion), the institution’s excellent collection of international modern and contemporary art can be found on the third, fourth, and fifth floors of an enormous 1969 modernist building that formerly served as the  Post CS post office headquarters in the groovy-gritty eastern docklands. Photography fans in particular will appreciate the Stedelijk’s collection, strong on Man Ray and Moholy-Nagy, with some Nan Goldin, Jack Pierson, and of course, Rineke Dijkstra thrown in for good measure. The permanent collection, which is often drawn upon for exhibitions, includes works from a wide range of art stars, including Picasso, Chagall, Warhol, and de Kooning.

Insider Tip:

Check out the top-floor canteen, which morphs into Club 11 on weekend nights, for excellent views of the city.
