Sam's Tailor
Central
Tsim Sha Tsui, China
Loquacious Sam (whose real name is Manu Melwani) has suited up everyone from George Bush Senior to the late Luciano Pavarotti to David Bowie. An Indian-born, old-school bespoke tailor (who began his career in Hong Kong making uniforms for the British Army), he routinely does two or three fittings to get a customer’s suit just so. The time spent with him is a pleasure; besides offering up plenty of charming banter, Sam often serves up cold cans of beer. He’s super-quick, but if he doesn’t finish your suit in time for you to carry it home, he’ll send it to you via courier.
Insider’s Tip: If you’re headed to Happy Valley, be sure to ask Sam for the skinny on the week’s races. He’s an avid fan and owns two racehorses of his own.
