Plateau Mont-Royal

Known as the Plateau, this hip, vibrant, edgy community is Montreal’s answer to Manhattan’s Greenwich Village and Lower East Side. Boulevard Saint-Laurent (locally called the Main), which cuts through the heart of the neighborhood, drew waves of Eastern European, Italian, Portuguese, and Chinese immigrants in the 20th century; their influences are still here, tucked among hip clothing and design stores and clubby restaurants and bars.
