Arguably the most beautiful bookshop in the world—and the first English-language one on the continent—Galignani is a meeting place that verges on house of worship. A literary star in its own right since opening in 1801, it is one of the rare independents still in the hands of its founding family. If the 50,000 titles stocked on these 1930’s wood shelves don’t suit, the staff prides itself on sourcing the unfindable and delivering it in record time (they proudly catered to Jackie O’s voracious appetite for French history tomes). And then there are the famed window displays, which are an event in themselves. What other bookshop would be granted the pick of Hermès’s archives, or celebrate the launch of Le Meurice chef Yannick Alléno’s cookbook by giving him carte blanche?
