True, a bouncer deciding whether you make the cut is a most un-Dutch thing, but this lounge and dance club right off the Leidseplein, Amsterdam’s version of Times Square, is clearly angling for world renown rather than just local credibility. A pan-Asian aesthetic dominates: Araki photographs line the walls, and opium den–style beds and low, lacquered tables line the edges of the lounge. The entire cocktail list was custom-blended by Amsterdam’s foremost mixologists, The Fabulous Shaker Boys. And the lighting and sound systems make the place look and sound like a well-choreographed music video. If all this sounds a bit ridiculous, it is, but the music will win you over. Jimmy Woo clearly made it onto the cool list as determined by the world’s best DJs because one of their number spins here almost every weekend.
