Humawaca
Palermo Soho
Buenos Aires, Argentina
For years, Argentine leather goods were (in)famous for combining good materials with bad design, something that people like Humawaca cofounder Ingrid Gudman, a former architect, are changing. Gudman’s locally made designs tend toward the surprising and multipart. Items include a wallet with fur-covered leather on the outside and a flower-printed interior, and the round “Media Naranja” purses made of two detachable halves that snap together. But it is Gudman’s BKF backpack (about $200), an inspired tribute to the butterfly chair (designed in 1938 by, appropriately, a crew of Buenos Aires architects with the initials B.K.F.), that turns the most heads.
Insider Tip: If you’re tired of the Palermo shopping circuit, visit Humawaca’s store in the more traditionally swank Recoleta neighborhood (Posadas 1380, 54-11/4811-5995).
