Entering this store is like stepping into a kinder, gentler era of travel. Malletier literally means “trunk maker,” and the shop is stocked with hand luggage and steamer trunks both small and large, but it’s the smaller items—document totes, laptop-friendly briefcases, duffels, wallets, and purses—that are considered a must in many fashion circles. Hermès, the other luxe leather house on Rue Saint-Honoré, may be more famous, but Goyard, which has been turning out handcrafted luxury items since 1853, is having something of a revival. Its signature chevron-patterned monogram is more covetable precisely because it is more discreet.
