Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

De rigueur for O'Keeffe aficionados, this museum, which opened in 1997 inside a 13,000-square-foot adobe former church, shows dozens of works by the curmudgeonly painter who spent the last half-century of her life just northwest of Santa Fe. Selections from the permanent collection rotate, but visitors will see plenty of her greatest hits—including Manhattan skylines, desertscapes, and enormous blossoms from her famous Flowers series. Even if you're not an O'Keeffe fan, the site is worth checking out for its superb temporary exhibits, which have included works by Marsden Hartley and Andy Warhol.

Tip: You’ll need to reserve a spot—preferably at least a month in advance—to take a tour of O'Keeffe's home and studio in Abiquiu (50 miles outside of Santa Fe proper), which the museum maintains ((505)685-4539; $30 per person). Tours are offered Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays between March and November; tours also run on Wednesdays from July through September. Try to book the 3:30 p.m. tour ($50) on Fridays (July-September), when Judy Lopez—who worked with O’Keeffe for more than a decade—leads groups through the studio; her insights and personal anecdotes are worth the surcharge.

Admission: $8; free Fridays 5-8 p.m. Closed Wednesdays, November-May.
