Detroit RiverWalk
Wildly popular in summer, RiverWalk stretches along the water for 2.5 miles of fountains, walkways, and green space starting at the Cobo Hall convention center. Most folks come simply to stroll, fish, or park themselves on a bench and take in the Windsor skyline across the way. Families love the absolutely marvelous carousel, in which kids giddily ride in circles atop creatures native to the Detroit River. The plan is to extend the RiverWalk to Belle Isle Bridge, which connects to Detroit’s enormous island park. Take advantage of free parking at nearby Rivard Plaza, at the corner of Atwater and Rivard streets.
Tip: Don’t miss The Gateway to Freedom, the realistic sculpture memorializing Detroit for its role as an Underground Railroad stop-off point for escaped slaves en route to Canada.
Admission: Free; $2 to ride the carousel
