Corcovado’s 127,000 acres of lush primary rainforest protect an extraordinary array of wildlife. Central America’s largest population of scarlet macaws makes its home here, among some 400 other bird species; so do 100-odd dazzling varieties of reptile—including red-eye frogs, glass frogs (which have transparent skin), and crayon-colored poison arrow frogs. And resident mammals include tapirs, squirrel monkeys, and jaguars (paw prints are usually seen even when the big cats aren’t).
Insider Tip:
Although you can explore Corcovado yourself (it’s easily accessible from the town of Puerto Jiménez—a sort of backpackers’ haven with lots of cafés and cheap lodging options), you might get more out of the experience by going as part of a guided package tour. Oso Aventura (011-506-735-5758; www.osaaventura.com) runs multiday hiking excursions into the park, although you’ll have to make separate bookings for spots at Corcovado’s four stations (camping areas).
