Recoleta

Comme Il Faut, Buenos Aires

In this tiny second-floor store, shoppers sit on leopard-skin benches as they try on the dagger-heeled tango shoes that cofounder (and accomplished tango dancer) Alicia Muñiz says redefined the Argentine dance. Before she and partner Raquel Coltrinari opened Comme Il Faut in 2003, tango shoes were typically black, closed-toe affairs—sexy, but traditional. The 90 or so small-production-run models Muñiz designs are anything but: think open-toe shoes made from pleated satin, velvet, and patent leather in bright reds and pinks (and more restrained colors too), with ankle ties and the occasional tassel. As the pillow in the showroom says, “So Many Shoes, So Little Time.” Pairs go for about $115, and the heels are high—seven, eight, or nine centimeters (between two and three inches).

Insider Tip: Ask for style “10-10” to try on a pair of shoes in Muñiz’s original open-toe design.
