Clube de Fado
Lisbon, 1100-521, Portugal
Clube de Fado is one of the top hot spots to hear Portugal's folk music and owner and guitarist Mario Pacheco has assembled a strong roster of traditional fadistas, including Maria Armanda and Machado Soares. The club is located in Alfama near the Lisbon Cathedral; ogival ceilings, thick, stone-edged walls and doorways, and a Moorish well are complimented by golden-yellow walls and red tablecloths. The traditional Portuguese entrees include bacalhau suado, the Clube de Fado steak, cod with prawns served in a cataplana, and grilled sole. Visitors have included such celebrities as Neil Armstrong and Woody Allen.
