West End
Celebration of Light
Vancouver’s enviable natural setting places this annual fireworks “competition” above most others in the world. International teams light up the sky over English Bay with the latest and greatest in fireworks, all set to music (the soundtrack is also broadcast on local radio). The entire West End is closed to automobile traffic from mid-afternoon on; by the time the show starts, the crowds along the waterfront and across the way on Kitsilano Beach usually swell to 350,000 spectators.
Insider Tip:
Make friends with a West End local; many Vancouverites have unspoiled views of English Bay from their high-rise windows, balconies, and rooftops—and host wine-and-cheese parties the nights of the celebration.
