Honolulu

Bishop Museum

1525 Bernice St.
Honolulu, HI, United States
TEL: (808) 847-3511

Probably the best museum complex in the world for everything Polynesian (as well as Melanesian and Micronesian), the Bishop is Hawaii’s most famous museum—and worth the hassle of getting to its out-of-the-way location just off the H-1 interstate. The crown jewel of the complex, the Hawaiian Hall, is housed in a stunning 19th-century lava-rock Victorian-era building that recently underwent a $21 million renovation. The Polynesian Hall houses rare Pacific culture artifacts, and the Kahili Room is filled with royal memorabilia including the fragile feather standards used as flags in old Hawaii. In the Science Adventure Center you can walk through a huge model of an erupting volcano and learn about the islands’ endemic and in many cases extinct flora and fauna.

Admission: $15.95. Open every day except Christmas.
