Art Basel Miami Beach
The citywide art-apalooza, which began in 2002 as an outgrowth of the renowned Swiss art fair, happens every year on the first weekend in December. Gallerists from all over the world set up shop at the Miami Beach Convention Center and other venues to show, sell, and schmooze, while parties thrown by Bulgari, Cartier, and other big names erupt all over town. The long weekend opens with a free evening concert on the sands of South Beach (past bands have included the punk rock New York Dolls and the genre-defying Scissor Sisters), followed by lectures, performance art pieces, and public installations at venues including the galleries in Wynwood, the Fairchild Tropical Garden, and the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. As an added bonus, Art Basel always brings star-studded exhibits to the city's celebrated boutique museums.
