The rapidly gentrifying side streets between Cihangir and İstiklâl Caddesi are lined with shops selling antiques, furniture, and weird-but-wonderful junk. This four-story showroom-mansion run by Erkal Aksoy (the neighborhood’s unofficial antiques king) is littered with textiles, pottery, Ottoman embroidery, and kaftans.
Insider Tip:
After an afternoon’s antiquing, stop at neighborhood institution Asri Turşucu (Ağa Hamam Caddesi 29A; 011-90-212-244-4724), an ancient pickle shop known for some seriously elderly pickles (rumor has it that some have been in their brine since the Eisenhower years). There are 22 varieties, including string bean, okra, plum, carrot, and the surprisingly tasty pear.
