Since founding Mango African Safaris 16 years ago with her business partner Casey Hermansen, Sullivan has intensively vetted each experience they offer, spending weeks at a time on the ground. She has hitchhiked, taken trains, and ridden camels, horses, and elephants, always seeking out what’s around the next corner. Sullivan pays particular attention to the pacing of a trip, limiting the number of one- and two-night stays at safari camps, and is adept at booking travel during the more affordable green season.

New Favorite: The high-design Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge, set in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, for travelers looking to combine fantastic wildlife viewing with serious creature comforts. The grounds have a spa, restaurant, and 12 suites outfitted with fireplaces and organic linens. Guests look out on fields of papyrus from private decks.

Specialties: Southern Africa, East Africa and the Indian Ocean islands
